Baseball Spits With Johnson County

FSCC Baseball took on Johnson County Community College in the final regular season conference series last Thursday and Friday. Game one saw the Cavaliers win 8-1. Nick Banman made his first career start on the mound for FSCC, going 5 innings and allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and striking out 5. Mackay Williams had two hits and scored the lone Greyhound run on a wild pitch by JCCC starter Jake Barton.

In game 2 the Hounds jump out to a 2-0 lead and carry that lead into the 7th behind a strong start from Justin O'Laughlin. O'Laughlin went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits and struck out 5. Boby Johnson struggled with some control issues walking in 2 Johnson County runners, but regained control and struck out 4 in 2.2 innings. Johnson did however take the loss when he allowed a run in the 8th inning. The Greyhound offense had many scoring opportunities come up short behind multi-hit games from Danny Crews, Jacob Biller, Gabe Franklin, and Mackay Williams. Jacob Biller also added his 15th homerun of the year in the Hounds 3-2 loss.

In an effort to beat incoming weather, the series shifted to Overland Park a day earlier than scheduled to complete the series. Starting pitcher Ryan McCollough got the Greyhounds back on track with a complete game shutout. He allowed just 4 hits and struck out 4 in the complete game effort. Andrew Tanous, Jedd Andrade and Brendan Welch led the offense for the Hounds with Tanous hitting a key home run to get the Hounds on the board in the 2nd.

FSCC attempted to keep the momentum in the final game of the series with Matt Hicks on the mound. Hicks went 5.2 innings in very tough rainy conditions allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and striking out 2. Darren Hasch homered for the Hounds and Jacob Biller had 2 hits and drove in a run in the rain shortened 5-3 Hounds win. Not only did the Hounds win both games, but also win the rain delay dance off before the game was called due to heavy rain. Head Coach John Hill III shared his thoughts on the series:
"I was very proud of the way our team responded after a tough day one of the series. Our veteran starting pitchers pitched like we needed them to, and we did enough offensively to win in tough conditions. Next comes the playoffs, and today proves that we are a team that can make some noise this postseason. Our guys embrace the challenge, and I look forward to seeing what they do this upcoming weekend."
FSCC Baseball will next be on the road in a postseason series beginning this Saturday. The opponent is yet to be determined, as the west division is concluding conference play today. The Hounds will either travel to Garden City or Hutchinson.
