All Star Game

Fort Scott Community College Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams hold a “Pechone Stepps Senior All-Star Game” annually. This game is held in April and has anywhere from 30-40 local girls and boys senior basketball players in attendance.

This All-Star game is named after Pechone Stepps, a para-educator and coach of the freshmen boys’ basketball team at Fort Scott High School. Pechone became paralyzed when he was struck by a drunk driver in 2002. Prior to the accident, Stepps was an accomplished athlete and doing what he loved, coaching women’s basketball at St. John’s University in New York City. On June 12, 2007, which is 1,845 days after he was struck by the drunk driver, Pechone took his first unassisted steps with the aid of a walker and is now using forearm crutches on a limited basis. Using forearm crutches is the next step in being able to walk again. Pechone is not only coaching and teaching at Fort Scott High School, he also speaks to teenagers about the dangers of drinking and driving and is always trying to instill in his team and students the message that each person “must live life to the fullest and enjoy each and every day, but be responsible and productive citizens.”
