FSCC Baseball played 6 games last week winning 4 of them. The action started Tuesday with a doubleheader against Ottawa University's Junior Varsity team. The Greyhounds took the first game 11-1 behind strong multi hit performances from Sean Moore and Danny Crews. Nathan Miller set the tone on the Mound for the Hounds picking up the win, while Nick Sloan came in to close it out in the run rule shortened game. Game two saw the bats quieted a little with a strong wind blowing in from left field. Danny Crews again led the Greyhound offense driving in 3 and hitting a bases clearing double. Zach Ponce got the win for the Greyhounds, and was followed up by Keller Agre, Brian Aranda and Greyhound closer Kobe Schmitt.
Thursday marked the beginning of the conference season for FSCC as they took on Coffeyville. The greyhounds were defeated by the Ravens by scores of 13-6 and 15-7. Justin O'Laughlin took his first loss of the year for FSCC, and 16 Coffeyville hits ultimately led to the Greyhounds demise. Will Baker, Brandon Krennrich, and Mitch Sloan each had multi-hit games for FSCC. In game to the offense did not stop for Coffeyville as they scored 15 runs on 15 hits. Nathan Miller took the loss for FSCC on the mound. Home runs from Brandon Krennrich and Danny Crews were not enough to lift the Greyhounds in the defeat.
Looking to rebound, FSCC travelled to Coffeyville on Saturday for the second half of the series. The Greyhounds sent sophomore Boby Johnson to the mound looking for a strong performance, which he more than gave the team. Johnson went 5 innings allowing just 2 runs and striking out 4. The offense also responded with multi-hit games from Brandon Krennrich, Danny Crews, Mitch Sloan and Sean Moore. Brandon Krennrich launched his second homerun of the year breaking open the game in the 11-2 win for FSCC. Game 2 of the doubleheader saw an offensive explosion for the hounds as they scored 16 runs on 17 hits. Freshman Ben McConnell was 5 for 6 with 3 doubles 1 triple and a single. 8 of 9 greyhound starting position players had a hit, and Sean Moore hit his first career home run as a Hound. Fort Scott also got huge contributions on the mound from Kyle Smith, and Nick Sloan. Smith knotched his first career college win going 4.1 innings and striking out 6. Head Coach John Hill III shared his thoughts on the week as a whole.
"Thursday was a tough day for all of us. That night we were all kind of wondering what direction this team was going to go after a difficult set of losses. I am incredibly proud of the team a whole for their response. The energy that we got from not just the guys on the mound, but the bench as well was terrific. We all made adjustments and executed them at a high level. We need to continue taking positive steps as a team."
FSCC will host Baker University on Tuesday beginning at 1:00. The Conference season will pick back up against Independence Thursday and Saturday. Thursday's game will be at Lions field beginning at 1:00, before shifting to Independence with a start time of 2:00.
