With more than three decades of experience in education and coaching, Jim Chandler is bringing a student-focused and community-driven vision to Fort Scott Community College as its new athletic director. Chandler, who has served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and school superintendent, said his passion for sports has been a constant throughout his life. “I have always been involved in sports—whether playing, coaching, or following my kids in their activities,” Chandler said. “Sports helped lead me to opportunities in college, and I’m a believer in the benefits of college athletics.”
Now leading FSCC’s athletic department, Chandler says his leadership philosophy centers on creating the best possible experience for student-athletes. “We work to give our student-athletes the best experience we can while they attend our institution,” he said. For Chandler, success is defined by personal development and academic achievement, not just athletic performance. “Success is seeing our student-athletes grow and develop as young adults and earn their diplomas,” he said.
Chandler’s vision for the department involves collaboration with college leadership, coaches, and the community to ensure programs thrive both athletically and academically. “Our goal is to compete on and off the field while being positive contributors to our community,” he said. He plans to uphold FSCC’s academic standards by continuing to prioritize education across all athletic programs. “All of our programs already focus on academics, and we want to maintain and grow that commitment as we help our athletes earn degrees,” he said. Supporting coaches and staff will be a key part of his leadership, which he said will be based on open communication and consistency in upholding policies.
Chandler acknowledged that finances remain a challenge, particularly when it comes to facility upgrades. “As with any school nowadays, finances are an integral part of maintaining and improving facilities,” he said. “We will need to explore new revenue streams.” He also hopes to expand community engagement by building on current outreach efforts. “I think it’s important for our coaches and teams to engage with the community,” Chandler said. “They already do a good job with community service and working with local schools, and I’d like to see us grow those efforts.” Chandler encourages students, parents, and community members to get involved by supporting teams—whether through attendance, donations, or simply showing school pride.
He also plans to work closely with the FSCC Foundation to strengthen relationships with alumni and donors. “That starts with understanding what’s already in place and continuing to build on it,” he said.
Chandler emphasized the importance of compliance with NJCAA and KJCCC regulations, noting that constant communication and education are vital to staying within guidelines. Looking ahead, his top priority is to establish stability and consistency across the department. Over the next three to five years, he hopes to secure new revenue sources, grow athletic programs, and enhance community pride. Chandler also highlighted broader issues facing college athletics, including shrinking revenue streams and declining high school sports participation, which impacts recruitment. Despite these challenges, he remains confident in FSCC’s potential.
“Our programs have a lot to offer,” he said. “And we want our community to be proud of what we’re building here.”
